I was up until 2 AM last night reading TammyJo Eckhart’s book of
kinky stories titled Eroscapes; pretty peculiar for a gal who
usually knocks off at 10 PM. It’s funny because most of us know TammyJo
for her book reviews and not necessarily for erotic fiction, so I was
particularly surprised to find myself awake in the wee hours taking in
the sweet and tangy words of her story Thanksgiving Vignette
which closes with "He licks his lips then answers in a trembling voice,
‘I’m thankful for my courage to find you and stay with you, Mistress.’
Purring, I pet his hair and run my other hand up his damp and shaky
back. ‘Me too, my boy, me too.’"
Eroscapes sounds a bit science fictiony, and it is in a way, with
stories from both the medieval past and a bit of the future. If you
think these might not shake your tailfeathers, you’d be wrong because in
fact they make a bit of dominance and submission even more sexy and
accessible for not being set in the daylight of millennium America with
its cell phones, e-mail and other day-to-day things to do. There’s
something particularly sexy about Hamal, a Jinn in the bottle coming out
after hundreds, thousands of years to serve a modern woman and facing it
with an old world mentality. But it’s more than the twist of the ancient
facing the modern that TammyJo offers us, it’s the emotional depth of
Hamal’s pain from his previous masters having tortured him in genuinely
cruel ways that his new Mistress must deal with. How she does this while
feasting on the pleasures of free wishes in Eternal Pain made
this my favorite story of the book.
And this is exactly what TammyJo brings to erotic writing that few
others do. Her stories are not simply wham bam thank you Mistress
whackadoos of BDSM scenes one after another, or even scenes stuck in
some other century for local color. Instead, her characters face very
real emotional situations that they face and work through using the
spirituality and tenderness of BDSM. For the reader who wants both hot
and sexy reading as well as something to think about the next day,
TammyJo’s stories are the thing to take with you to bed. Just remember
to go to sleep on time so you can get up for work!
