SPECIAL NOTE: Questions are followed by responses from both A and Gee who are co-leaders

SENSUOUS SADIE: What motivated you to start CLOAK?

A: "The motivation to start CLOAK came into being because of the lack of blacks being visible (out of the closet) in our local BDSM community. I was sure I was not the only black interested in kink. I want a comfortable introduction to this wonderful lifestyle available for our black community. And to introduce the many options in the mainstream BDSM community. Not to separate the two but to bring us together as one."

Gee: "The motivation on my part was when A asked me to help her start the group. Although I had the same concerns as A but, I also wanted education to be offered in a black perspective so to enlighten blacks that this lifestyle is not just for whites."

Sadie: How would you describe yourself as a leader?

A: "I never considered myself a leader with the inception of this group. All I wanted was to find other blacks with the same interests as mine. To explore our kink safely, educate and interact not only on a BDSM level but also on social level. It just turned out that as in any group there has to be someone to do all the work so if that is being a leader then I am it with CLOAK co-founder Gee. But, I soon realized that one person or two couldn't do all. So, I believe that all members of CLOAK are leaders."

Gee: "In this lifestyle I consider Viola Johnson a leader. As far as the group is concerned I define the term 'leader' as a person who initiates. Along with the other co-founder A, we are leaders of the group but it is our original members who bring the questions and ideas that! concern the members of CLOAK."

Sadie: Do you think the Black BSDM community differs from the White BDSM community?

A: "To answer that question I would have to say that people are individuals and it has nothing to do with race. That is not a reality as a whole. We are not born to be different we are taught to be. I would venture to say that differences in the community as a whole has to do with demographics."

Gee: "The community no but culturally yes! In our area blacks are very conservative. And we do have different questions that have been asked in reference to sceneing. Example: bruising because of a darker skin pigmentation etc."

Sadie: What are the characteristics that make you an effective leader?

A: "Being proactive, productive, integrity, diversity, respect, honesty, and open-mindedness are great characteristics of being an effective leader. I hope one day to be able to achieve all of those. For I am a work in progress, with always something to learn."

Gee: "Being open-minded, willing to listen and initiate ideas that are brought to the CLOAK Core Group. Being able to talk with other people in other groups and make sure that we are all on the same page when it comes to educating everyone with an interest. Being SSC."

Sadie: What are your hopes for CLOAK down the road? And special projects?

A: "To be a lifestyle group that is recognized as being in the forefront as one that is outstanding in the education and growth of this lifestyle. And to be able to be accepted by others outside this lifestyle. We recently had a special projects realized by having out first demonstration on rope bondage. Previously we just did presentation of topics of interest to the group. Previous topics included: Online to Real-time, Communications, and Christianity and BDSM."

Gee: "Just like A said that we will be accepted outside the community and there will not be a need to have to meet undercover so to speak. Hopefully I would like to see other groups to meet with us to show that we are all basically the same. Maybe a yearly event."

Sadie: How long have you been involved in the BDSM scene? Please tell me a little bit about your background and experience.

A: "I have been involved in the real-time scene for three years actively participating in a local group prior to CLOAK. Attending monthly classes and demos to see where I felt I would fit in this wonderful lifestyle. Being a newbie I first classified myself as a submissive. Not wanting to rush into a situation I would regret. I spent a lot of time with experienced subs and dominants observing. Never feeling any pressure to join in any scenes until I was ready. As time went on I felt the need to experience some of the sensations of scenes in the role of submissive but not submitting. Also to experience the dominant side I have had discussions with submissives on their wants and desires in relationships with dominants. Also, topping occasionally on a willing submissive. Even though our lifestyle is a very sexual one I believe the biggest percentage is mental. And I must say I do get a rush from being in control. But, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a long term relationship with a dominant and on occasion do some topping."

Gee: "I have been in the lifestyle 3 1/2 yrs. I first classified myself a submissive with a dominant disposition. Then as I began to go to meetings and workshops. I found I did not have to make a declaration and take my time making my decision. At this time I am a switch. I am enjoying the friends I have made thus far."

Sadie: You recently went to a lockdown sponsored by a group in South Carolina that was held at the Sanctuary in Atlanta. What was this like?

Gee: "The Sanctuary is public dungeon located in Atlanta, Georgia. A lockdown is when the facility is closed down to the public and a group has rented it out for private play. It also consists of classes and round table discussions. Example: a singletail presentation or answer and question time by a well-known figure in the BDSM lifestyle."

Sadie: Thank you for speaking with me!
